Gorga Batak, is an intricate pattern design found on the exteriors on the traditional homes of Batak people, one of Indonesia’s ethnic group. Historically, each pattern held distinct meanings and functions. Over time, its significance has evolved, now serving as a cultural symbol of identity and belonging.

I designed these patterns by analyzing photographs and conducting research on their structure, arrangement, and symbolism. This process deepened my understanding of their forms, leading
me to explore their application beyond architecture

Currently, I am experimenting on creating a toolkit for people to try to create these pattern themselves, reflecting on their own homes. Those in the diaspora also often feel disconnected from their cultural roots and unable to sense the space they currently live in as a place of identity. I’m hoping this project could encourage people to reflect on their connection with their homes.
